To be honest, “Ocean Waves” is really only worth watching if you are a Ghibli completionist, otherwise, you are not missing anything. The new movie Barbie has broken several box office records. Based on the novel of the same name, the story of Ocean Waves follows a young college kid whos returning home after his first year at university but after. This is not a good message to be putting out there. Meanwhile, Yutaka, the boy that actually cares for Rikako, is sidelined. In fact, they are quite horrible to each other. Later, her photo falls from a shelf as he exits his apartment before flying to Kchi. Most damningly, however, Taku and Rikako are forced together by the plot, even through neither has done much to earn the other's affection. Overview At Kichijji Station, Tokyo, Taku Morisaki glimpses a familiar woman on the platform opposite. An extra thirty minutes would have worked wonders for this film. Rikako waits for him instead of boarding the train and Taku realizes that. An enthralling snapshot of Ocean Waves male lead character Taku Morisaki, with mid-length jet-black hairstyle wearing red bomber jacket, and faded denim. Many potentially interesting threads are picked up, superficially explored, and then put down, or even pulled out of thin air. Ocean Waves, known in Japan as I Can Hear the Sea is a 1993 Japanese anime coming-of-age. Friendship, subtle love, a trip to Tokyo and so on all came back to him as the film evolves. ‘Ocean Waves’ may not be a Ghibli masterpiece. ![]() The film remains highly realistic, and the characters believable throughout. Rikako remains enigmatic to the very end, and Taku blunders through his meetings with her. The fact that this is a TV movie, and therefore restricted in length, works against the story. The film’s style is very understated: only little is spoken out, and most of the feelings transgress through body gestures. Even Ghibli can't do much to make it more interesting. Unfortunately, there are only moments of Ghibli genius in this film.Īnime stories about the two high school boys fawning over the mysterious wild girl is almost as cliché as giant mechas, or the clueless, emotionless, boy who manages to attract every woman from a thousand miles around. But there are moments where the naturalism and attention to detail reveal themselves, a close up of someone sliding their feet into their sneakers like slippers before walking across the room, for example. ![]() There is a love-triangle, a crazy impromptu trip to Tokyo, and some other stuff before Taku and Rikako get together on a train platform, returning to their second semester of college.īeing made for TV, the animation quality of this movies is, of course, several notches below Ghibli's standard. The main drama of the film comes from exploring his relationships with is old friend, Yutaka, and Rikako, the mysterious new girl in his class. Set in small-town Japan, “Ocean Waves” centers around a young man named Taku, who is just finishing up school.
